Seghesio Zinfandel 2003
[Around £20-£22, see www.libertywine.co.uk]

Despite the fairly gentle mouth-feel this is a very well made, fruit-packed extravaganza. Look for elements of brandy butter and concentrated damson. This wine was matured for a year mainly in American oak (coconut), which partly explains its exuberance, though French adds complexity and Gallic restraint. Despite the 'nearly not wine' alcohol level (14.9p/c.) this is balanced, poised even. NB. The 2002 acheived 15.2p/c! Seghesio is a family owned business with vinous roots dating back to 1895.
